The three Islamic faces of suicide bombing
|
|
The Los Angeles Times
By Amir Taheri
Does Islam promote suicide bombing? Three answers seem to be circulating in the Muslim world.
The first could be described as "yes-yes." It comes from the groups that recruit and use suicide bombers. Their argument is: Because we regard Israel as evil, we not only have a right but also a duty to fight it even in ways that are otherwise evil.

The Associated Press
Pir-e-Herisht -- Dressed in white to symbolize purity, the priest carried a torch down the steps of the temple and set fire to a pile of wood to end the celebration of one of the world's oldest religious rites.

The crowd's distraction
|
|
US News
The crowds that have taken to the streets of Arab cities are good spectacle. In one view, they must be conciliated lest the Arab world's ruling regimes be swept aside. Out of concern over the violence of the crowds, we are told, was launched the mission of Colin Powell, the secretary of state. It was believed in Washington that Jordan's monarchy was on the verge of collapse. But in truth, there is no conceivable diplomacy between Israel and the Palestinians that can conciliate the crowds. A political culture that ... more

Where is Osama, and how did he get there anyway?

National Review
I see where somebody in the Pentagon has "informed" the Washington Post that they have "concluded" that Osama bin Laden escaped to Pakistan during the battle of Tora Bora last December. To be sure, if you read down to the bottom of the Post piece, you will find that our top guys don't believe it and actually say there is no information whatsoever to prove that. But it's today's story and it's good reading, and hey, ... more

Iranians seek a voice
|
|
ThisisLondon.co.uk
Iranian cinema is as fashionable over here as a Prada veil might be in downtown Tehran, but it's doubtful that this visiting performance from Theatre Bazi will make their theatre so modish. Not that this strangely absorbing, reworking of the Helen Keller story about a deaf, blind mute doesn't deserve a wider audience. It's just that its methods are so abstruse that it is unlikely to break box-office records.
