In the first speech on foreign policy by a member of the Bush Administration in the United Kingdom on Monday, JOHN BOLTON Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Affairs at the State Department, affirmed, "there is no doubt that in my mind that if there were a democratically elected government with real power, the policies pursued by the government of Iran would be different from the policies pursued by the current government."
He added that, "the issue for us is what to do about what the current government is doing because it is actively seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction. Our feeling is that [we should increase] both diplomatic and other pressure on states that are supplying them with nuclear missile technology in particular and [make] sure that they do not have alternative channels to acquire this technology. At the same time [we ought to encourage] the forces in civil society in Iran [that] want to see the regime changed, to be successful. [Accordingly] we have the greatest chance from the outside of limiting the regime's international options."

Regular Iran-Russia Caspian freight ferry service established

The previously irregular trans-Caspian freight ferry service between Russia and Iran is now running to a frequent and regular schedule, the Russian newspaper Izvestiya reports.
Russia's Caspian ferries have been handed over to local management and a large increase in freight carriage is expected, the newspaper states. The following is the text of report by HTML version of the newspaper on 5 February:
Astrakhan Region: Today the return of the ferry boat Akvarama from its first regular journey to the Iranian port of Anzali is expected at the trading port of Olya which has become the key link on the Russian side of the North-South international transportation corridor. A regular maritime cargo service will thereby have begun.
